Scientia Secondary School
Annual Speech Day 2020-2021
Scientia Secondary School celebrated her Annual Speech Day on June 5, 2021 amidst the covid-19 pandemic which is still raging in many parts of the world. Most schools in Hong Kong have switched their Speech Days online because of social distancing. Thanks to the determination and fruitful and effective collaboration of the school, we managed to mark this important occasion in our Assembly Hall. We were especially grateful to members of the School Board, who were all there to present awards and certificates, making the occasion a memorable one for our graduates of 2021.
The simple yet ceremonious event, attended mainly by teachers, parents and students, commenced with the raising of the National Flag, followed by the “Passing-on-the-Torch Ceremony” which symbolizes the passing on of traditions, dreams and hopes from our Form Six graduates to our junior form students.
Dr. C.Y. Wong, in his principal’s address, highlighted the importance of the moral and value education, and most of all, patriotism — the love for one’s country. Our graduates, he emphasized, should be ready to contribute to the prosperity of Hong Kong and China. He reminded graduates to be grateful to those who care about them as they had witnessed how our school with ‘ageing’ facilities transform itself to a contemporary and comfortable campus after the major repair works. These were all the concerted efforts of the Labour Union, the School Board, the school, alumni and parents. He also announced that we raised more than HK$1,100,000 in our 75th Anniversary. He rounded up his speech by reiterating the school’s commitments to not just academic excellence but nurturing passionate and righteous persons and developing their potential to the fullest so that they could become successful persons.
In her vote of thanks, Jessie Yan, the representative of class 2021, expressed a heartfelt gratitude to the unconditional and unlimited love and care of their parents, the mutual support among classmates and, most of all, the devotion and encouragement of teachers who have opened their doors to the world of knowledge. She spotlighted the incident in February when the epidemic was still widespread. Their teachers insisted that they come to school to have face-to-face classes, accentuating how teachers sacrificed their time and ‘safety’ to help them. She pledged that they would always strive for a bright future, whether at school or at work and live up to the expectations of the teachers, to be open-minded and self-motivated in the pursuit of knowledge.
The Speech Day concluded with a performance by the Class of 2021, which served to refresh their fond and affectionate memories of their six years here in Scientia Secondary School — now their alma mater.
